Norfolk, Va. | After a two-year hiatus, Florida A&M men's basketball returns to Norfolk, Va., for the 2021 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament held at the Scope Arena.
As the MEAC Southern Division's No. 2 seed, the Rattlers will square off against Morgan State, the No. 3 seed in the MEAC Northern Division, on Thursday in the quarterfinals with tip-off scheduled for approximately 6 p.m.
Florida A&M earned the second seed after finishing the regular season going 8-11 overall, while carrying a 7-5 record in league play. This is the highest seed the Rattlers have received in the MEAC Tournament since 2007, when FAMU earned the No. 2 seed en route to winning the tournament championship.
2020-21 First-Team All-MEAC and All-Defense selection
MJ Randolph, has been a key contributor to the Rattlers' success this season. Randolph is averaging 15.2 points per game, which is sixth among all scorers in the MEAC. He's also fourth in the conference in rebounding (6.5), assists (4.2) and steals (1.8).
Offensively, FAMU is eighth is scoring offense (68.1 ppg) but is the most efficient in field-goal percentage, shooting a league-high 44.3 percent.
Defensively, the Rattlers have the best scoring defense in the conference, giving up a league-low 68.1 points per game and holding opponents to a 42.8 field goal percentage, including a league-low 28.0 percent from behind the arc.
Morgan State finished the regular season 12-7 overall, with a 7-5 mark in conference play as well. The Bears are led offensively by Troy Baxter who is 17.1 ppg (first in the MEAC).
As a team, MSU is averaging a league best 80.7 ppg, while shooting 44.4 percent from the field.
The Bears enter the tournament coming off an 82-75 loss to Delaware State.
The winner of Thursday's contest advances to the MEAC Semifinals to take on Coppin State, the No.1 seed in the MEAC North.
