TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | There's no place like home. The Florida A&M volleyball team will soon experience its first matches inside Al Lawson Center.
A Sunday(Oct. 10) doubleheader pits the Rattlers against Prairie View A&M and Alcorn State at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, before Southern visits Monday (Oct. 11) at 1 p.m.Â
About the Rattlers
- The team commands a 16-8 record at home over the last three seasons, starred by an unblemished 7-0 mark in 2017.
- The Rattlers enter the weekend on back-to-back 3-0 decisions over Mississippi Valley State and Bethune-Cookman; seven of FAMU's 10 wins this year were sweeps.
- They are the only team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) with an overall record above .500 as well as the only team with double-digit wins (10).
- A 3-2 triumph over Auburn (Sept. 17) marked their first win against a Power 5 institution since 2006.
- Gokhan Yilmaz is two wins away from securing his 50th as a head coach; he compiled 17 in a single season at Charlotte and has 31 at the helm of FAMU.Â
- Florida A&M holds the No. 1 spot in the SWAC in several statistical categories, including hitting percentage (.235), digs per set (17.33), match win-loss percentage (.667), assists (591), and kills (657).
- Dominique Washington is in the midst of a breakout season. She currently ranks 18th in the country in total kills (252) and fifth in kills per set (5.14). The graduate outsider hitter is also the only athlete in the SWAC with more than 200 kills.
- Jessa Long sits atop the SWAC with 5.51 digs per set and 270 total digs, ranking seventh and 51st in the country, respectively.
- Irem Ucar has lent a hand in most of the team's points this season and leads the SWAC with 10.27 assists per set.
Scouting the Competition Â
- Prairie View A&M is seeking its first win of the season, currently managing a record of 0-17.
- Alcorn State (2-14, 1-3) swept PVAM for its first SWAC win; Mikenzie Young-Mullins ranks third in the conference in service aces (18) and eighth in kills (112).
- Kendall Dutton leads Southern (2-8, 1-3) with 92.0 points, while Kennedy Joubert adds a team-high 141 digs and Xaria Taylor 22 blocks. Â Â
