Rattlers Run Out of Gas in ASU Setback

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | The Florida A&M and Alabama State volleyball teams took to Al Lawson Center Sunday (Oct. 17) on the hunt for their sixth Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) win. Unfortunately, FAMU will have to wait a little longer, as the Hornets roared from behind to claim three straight sets and the victory (25-27, 14-25, 25-17, 27-25, 15-10).

The opening set demanded extra points, but the determined Rattlers put Alabama State away, 27-25, en route to their 16th straight set win. The home side built sizeable leads throughout the frame, including a pair of five-point advantages at 9-4 and 16-11; yet, the scoreboard read 17-all as ASU remained on the attack. Both teams had an opportunity to secure the set, but a service ace by Dominique Turner, followed by an ASU error, pushed FAMU to success.

The Rattlers recorded 21 points in the next set before Alabama State could notch 10, and the ensuing period appeared to be going more or less the same. That was, until ASU compiled a 13-1 run. The stretch not only earned the team the set victory (25-17), but it also concluded FAMU's streak at 17-straight set wins, its first dropped set since Sept. 24. The Hornets refused to go away, trailing by as many as nine in the fourth, before capturing the 27-25 decision. They sat in the driver's seat for most of the fifth, despite an early 3-0 deficit.

The decision also concluded FAMU's five-game winning streak.

Dominique Washington tabbed a double-double on 21 kills and 10 digs, while Jasmine Robinson contributed 10 and seven, respectively, with three service aces. The Rattlers (13-6, 5-2) return to Al Lawson Center Monday for a 6 p.m. meeting with Alabama A&M.
