TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | The Florida A&M University women's basketball team captured their first Division I win of the season on Monday evening, outlasting Coppin State, 58-48, in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play at the Al Lawson Center.
FAMU (3-12 overall, 1-3 MEAC) also snapped a nine-game slide with the win, while Coppin State (0-16, 0-4 MEAC) remained winless on the season.
THE LEADING LADIES
Graduate center Shalunda Burney-Robinson recorded her fourth double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 13 points, while pulling down 11 rebounds. Junior
Kailya Jackson scored 12 points, splashing a pair of three-pointers, while freshman guard
Alaina Rice finished with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals. Freshman
Kayla Massop added nine points and five rebounds.
Coppin State was paced by Chance Graham with a double-double, 12 points and 12 rebounds. Alexandria Hamilton finished with 12 points, while Oluwadamilola Oloyode finished with 13 rebounds.
HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED
The first quarter saw both teams come out struggling on both ends, with the two clubs battling to a 12-12 tie after 10 minutes.
FAMU opened the second period on a 7-0 run to vault out to a 19-12 lead, forcing Coppin State to call timeout. Coppin answered with a 4-0 run to cut the Lady Rattler lead to 19-16, before Shalunda Burney-Robinson splashed a 3-pointer to put the Lady Rattlers ahead, 22-16 with 6:28 left in the half.
The Lady Rattlers went on a 6-1 run late in the second to extend their lead to 28-17 with 2:56 left in the half. FAMU closed out the half on a 4-1 flurry to grab a 32-18 halftime lead.
Coppin State opened the third with a 10-4 run to close to 36-28 with 6:34 left, and eventually closed to one point, before the Lady Rattlers closed out the quarter with a 7-1 run for as 45-38 edge after three.
The two clubs battled down the stretch
, with Coppin State closing to 50-48 with 1:58 left, before the Lady Rattlers went on a 6-0 run for a 56-48 lead, capped by a pair of
Alaina Rice with 48 seconds left.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
> FAMU had its lowest turnover total of the season – 18 – while forcing the Eagles into 21 miscues, thanks to 17 steals by FAMU.
> The Rattlers had the rebounding edge, 48-47, and they had the better shooting night, hitting 32.2 percent (19-of-59) from the floor, to 27.1 percent (16-of-59).
WHO'S GOT NEXT?
The Lady Rattlers will have a split weekend this week, playing Saturday at South Carolina State (2 p.m.) in Orangeburg, S.C., befofe returning to the Al Lawson Center for a 2 p.m. matinee against North Carolina Central.
