DURHAM, N.C. (March 23) - The Florida A&M baseball team dropped a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader to North Carolina Central as the Eagles won game one, 5-4 and the second contest 3-2, here Friday afternoon at the Durham Athletic Park.
FAMU finished the contest with eight hits as both
Bennie Robinson and
Kelvin Singletary finished with two hits each for the Rattlers, while NCCU garnered 10 hits in the contest with Luis Diaz finishing with a game high three hits for the Eagles.
Michael Roman (2-3) picked up the win for the Eagles as he toed the mound for eight innings, allowing eight hits, four earned runs and striking out two. Gavin Guarrera (6) got the save as he pitched one scoreless inning in the three batters he faced.
David Duncan (0-5) received the loss for FAMU as he gave up nine hits, three earned runs and struck out six in the seven and one-third innings of work, while
Stephen Dollar pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief, allowing one hit and striking out one in the three batters he faced.
NCCU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth as Diaz scored on Spencer Franceschetti sacrifice bunt.
FAMU reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth as Bruce Farrar scored on
Jared Walker's double to left field. Walker would then score on a Robinson single to left field. Then both Peck and Robinson would score on a
Kelvin Singletary double down the left field line, giving the Rattlers a 4-1 lead.
The Eagles cut the Rattlers, lead to 4-2 as Zack Lee scored on a FAMU error, followed by a Franceschetti ground out scoring Diaz in the bottom of the sixth.
NCCU would score two runs in the bottom of the eighth as Carter Williamson doubled down the left field line, scoring Diaz, followed by Franceschetti doubling down the right field line scoring Kori Woods, giving the Eagles the 5-4 win.
In game two, FAMU tallied eight hits in the contest as eight Rattlers finished with one hit each, while NCCU tallied four hits in the contest as four Eagles finished with one hit apiece.
Glenn Frye picked up the win for NCCU as he pitched six and two-third innings, allowing eight hits, two earned runs and striking out four in the 29 batters he faced. Guarrera picked up the save for the Eagles.
Heath Blackburn received the loss for FAMU as he pitched six innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs and striking out four in the 26 batters he faced.
Troy Marrow gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as he scored on a Dylan Drayton ground out to second.
Sylvester Peck tied the game at 1-1 for the Rattlers as he scored on a Marlon Gibbs single to left field in the top of the fourth inning.
Ryan Collins and Rodney Thompson gave the Eagles, a 3-1 lead as they both scored on a Lee single up the middle scoring Collins and Thompson in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Scott Sheplak would cut NCCU's lead to 3-2 as he singled to left field scoring Peter Jackson, in the top of the seventh inning, for the finale.
FAMU will conclude its three-game series against NCCU on Saturday, March 23 at Durham Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.
