TALLAHASSEE, Fla
. – FAMU golfer
Shepherd Archie III, leads all golfers for the lowest individual score
at the 2011 FAMU Spring Invitational Golf Tournament.
The event is being held, for the first time ever, at the Fred Couples Signature-Southwood Golf Course.
Archie carded a 4-under-par round of 68 on the championship layout course.
He birdied hole numbers 1,2,7,10,16 and 17.
He dropped shots with bogeys at No.5 and No.9.
Archie holds a one-stroke medalist lead over B-CU's Willie Mack.
Mack scored a 3-under-par score of 69 on the first day.
Mack's score propelled the B-CU Wildcats to the low team score at 287.
Emmanuel
Petrich (71), Matthew McKnight (73), Jamichael Jones (74) and Rafael
Abad (80) rounded out the Wildcat's roster, who hold the top spot.
Tennessee State ends the first day in second place, with a team score of 289.
Cameron Scitern led the Tigers with a 1-under-par score of 71.
Andrew Warner (72), Richard Gill (72), Ryan Pierson (74) and Ryan Smith (78) rounded out the TSU squad.
The Rattlers are currently in fourth place with a team score of 296.
Wesley Yates (75), Elijah Jackson (76), Random Holt (77), and Cody Sapp (82) rounded out the Rattler squad.
The tournament features seven HBCU teams from across the country.
Participating
in the event are host school FAMU, Bethune-Cookman University,
Tennessee State University, Hampton University, Savannah State
University, North Carolina Central University, and the University of
Maryland Eastern Shore.
Individual entries include James Coonce (86), Sedrick Bailey (103) and Alex Clapp (75).
The final round will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning at the Southwood Golf Course.
