BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Florida A&M Women's Cross Country student-athlete
Rose Wanjiru Muturi has been named Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Newcomer of the Week for the period of October 12-18, announced by the league office Monday afternoon from its headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama.
Â
A 5-foot-1, junior from Nyahururu, Kenya, Rose Muturi arrived to Florida A&M prior to the start of the 2026 fall season after transferring in from Virginia State.
Â
Over the weekend, she placed seventh overall in the women's 6K race at the FSU XC Invite hosted by Florida State at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida. In the process, she helped lead the Rattlers to sixth-place finish as a team out of 16. Muturi logged a time of 22:24.6 and had a faster time than every Florida Atlantic runner and all but one Florida State runner.
Â
Now, she turns her attention to focus on the 2026 SWAC Championships in Tallahassee, Florida on October 27.
Â
For Muturi, this is her first SWAC award of the season.
Â
Bethune-Cookman made a sweep on the Men's Cross Country side with Andrew Kiplagat earning Runner of the Week and Jayden Santos-Gonzalez corralling Newcomer of the Week. On the Women's Side, Lisel Ndlovu was named Runner of the Week.
