NEW ORLEANS, La. –– Florida A&M tennis came up short in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship, falling 4-3 to Alabama State.
The Rattlers took care of business early, winning the doubles point with wins from Sierra Sandy, Larissa Silva (6-2), and Rebekkah Gaines, Reagan Harris (6-3).
The Rattlers fell early in singles play as Sandy (6-0, 6-2) and Susan Salinas (6-2, 6-1) gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead. Wins from Harris (6-0, 1-6, 6-3) and Gaines (6-2, 2-6, 6-0) gave the Rattlers a 3-2 lead before Genesis Whitelock fell (7-6, 6-4).
Sara Rakim battled back after falling 1-0 (6-3) early to tie it up 1-1 (7-5) but lost the final set 6-2.
Gaines and Harris were both named to the SWAC All-Tournament Team.
