Coach Jefferies Jr. rejoined his alma mater, Florida A&M University, in January 2025 as the Passing Game Coordinator and Wide Receivers Coach.
He arrives at FAMU following a successful stint at Western Illinois University, where he served as the Wide Receivers Coach during the 2024 season. Under his leadership, Western Illinois boasted one of the Top 10 graded wide receiver units in the FCS, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF). His receivers combined for more than 3,000 receiving yards, highlighted by All-American wideout Matthew Henry (1,172 yards) and All-Conference receiver Eli Aragon (792 yards). The Leathernecks’ passing offense also earned the highest wide receiver grade in the Ohio Valley Conference, finishing the season with an impressive 81.2% grade by PFF standards.
Before his time at Western Illinois, Jefferies spent two seasons at the University of Illinois as a graduate assistant, where he helped guide the Illini to 13 wins, including an appearance in the 2022 ReliaQuest Bowl.
In 2023, Illinois’ receivers caught 216 passes for 3,175 yards and 23 touchdowns, led by Isaiah Williams, who ranked among the top 25 nationally in receiving yards. The Illini’s passing offense finished 35th in the FBS, showcasing Jefferies’ ability to develop consistent and explosive playmakers.
During the 2022 campaign, Illinois achieved its first-ever ranking in the College Football Playoff standings and reached as high as No. 14 in the AP Poll. The Illini passing offense was recognized as the most improved in the nation, finishing third in completion percentage (69.6%) after jumping 122 spots in national rankings. Under Jefferies’ guidance, All-Big Ten receiver Isaiah Williams ranked among the conference’s leaders in receptions, yards, and touchdowns.
Prior to his time in Champaign, Jefferies spent the 2021 season at North Carolina State University as an offensive assistant, working directly with the Wolfpack quarterbacks.
Jefferies began his coaching career at Garner Magnet High School in his hometown of Garner, North Carolina, where he served as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.
A proud Florida A&M alumnus, Jefferies played quarterback for the Rattlers during the 2016–17 seasons. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from FAMU’s College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, graduating with a 3.5 GPA. He was also a semifinalist for the 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy, the most prestigious academic award in college football.
As a player, Jefferies represented FAMU in the HBCU Spirit of America Bowl, where he scored the game-winning touchdown, and previously competed at Santa Rosa Junior College, throwing for 1,920 yards and 12 touchdowns in just 10 games.
