GREENSBORO, N.C., April 30, 2015 – The Florida A&M Rattler track team was in fourth place after the first day of competition of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
FAMU scored 13 points on Thursday led by the discus throwing duo of Demtrio Henderson, finishing third with a toss of 46.82m, and Xavier Mackey placing fifth with a toss of 45.66m, accounting for 10 points. Dennis Kipkogsei's sixth place finish in the 5000 meters (15:37.36) picked up three points.
In preliminatry events, McDaniel Olivier and Dennis Pugh qualified for the 400 meter hurdle final after Thursday's heats. Olivier had the second best time and Pugh the fourth best overall.
Overall, Maryland Eastern Shore grabbed the early lead with 34.50 points, while defending champion Bethune-Cookman is second with 29 points, followed by North Carolina A&T State with 23.
Maryland Eastern Shore's Khalil Rmidi Kinini broke the meet record in the 5000m. Rmidi Kinini set the record with a time of 14:43.36, replacing UMES' Mustapha Habbani (2011) record. Teammate Oussama Chouati finished second, with a time of 15:14.65, while North Carolina A&T State's Darren White placed third at 15:18.95.
Emmanuel Price of Hampton tallied 3,663 points during the first day of the decathlon, while North Carolina A&T State's Todd Townsend is second with 3,577 points. Price won events in the shot put and high jump to grab the lead.
UMES' Dillon Simon finished first in the discus with a 55.98m (173-10 ft.) throw. Barry Kimbrough of B-CU placed second at 47.14m (154-08 ft.).
Ed'Ricus Williams of B-CU won the high jump with a leap of 2.06m (6-09.00 ft.), and teammate Kenneth Fisher recorded a second-place finish with a leap of 2.01m (6-07.00 ft.) and N.C. A&T's Nehemiah Lipford placed third at 2.01m (6-07.00 ft.).
The Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships continue Friday, May 1, with the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon at 9 a.m. Other field events on Friday's slate includes, the men's and women's long jump and shot put. The afternoon schedule continues with the men's and women's semifinal in the 400m, 100m dash, 800m, women's 100m hurdles and men's 110m hurdles.
The competition wraps up Saturday at 9 a.m. with field events including: men's and women's pole vault, javelin, and triple jump. The women's and men's 4x100m relays will begin the running finals at 1 p.m. Rounding out the evening's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 4:20 p.m.
